Recognizing God's Authority
Bible verse of the day: Exodus 5:2
NIV (New International Version):
"Pharaoh said, ‘Who is the Lord, that I should obey him and let Israel go? I do not know the Lord and I will not let Israel go.’"
KJV (King James Version):
"And Pharaoh said, Who is the LORD, that I should obey his voice to let Israel go? I know not the LORD, neither will I let Israel go."
NKJV (New King James Version):
"And Pharaoh said, ‘Who is the LORD, that I should obey His voice to let Israel go? I do not know the LORD, nor will I let Israel go.’"
NLT (New Living Translation):
"‘Is that so?’ retorted Pharaoh. ‘And who is the LORD? Why should I listen to him and let Israel go? I don’t know the LORD, and I will not let Israel go.’"
ESV (English Standard Version):
"But Pharaoh said, ‘Who is the LORD, that I should obey his voice and let Israel go? I do not know the LORD, and moreover, I will not let Israel go.’"
MSG (The Message):
"Pharaoh said, ‘Who is GOD that I should listen to him and send Israel off? I know nothing of this so-called GOD and I’m certainly not going to send Israel off.’"
What We Learn:
1. Rejection of God's Authority:
Pharaoh’s question reflects his pride, ignorance, and defiance toward the God of Israel.
2. God's Sovereignty:
Pharaoh’s refusal sets the stage for God to display His power and authority through the plagues and the eventual deliverance of Israel.
3. Faith in God’s Plan:
Despite human opposition, God’s plans are unstoppable. His power will always triumph over earthly resistance.
Reflection:
Pharaoh’s dismissive attitude toward God serves as a warning against pride and hardness of heart. It challenges us to reflect on whether we truly recognize and submit to God’s authority in our lives. Even when faced with resistance or doubt, we can trust that God’s power and purpose will prevail.
Are there areas in your life where you resist God’s authority? How can you submit more fully to His will today?
Prayer:
Dear Lord, Thank You for reminding us of Your sovereignty and power. Help us to recognize and submit to Your authority in every area of our lives. Soften our hearts where they have grown resistant, and teach us to trust in Your plans even when faced with opposition. May we honor You through our obedience and faith. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
