Forgive as You Have Been Forgiven

Bible verse of the day - Colossians 3:13

New International Version (NIV):

"Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you."

King James Version (KJV):

"Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye."

New King James Version (NKJV):

"Bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do."

New Living Translation (NLT):

"Make allowance for each other’s faults, and forgive anyone who offends you. Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others."

English Standard Version (ESV):

"Bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive."

The Message (MSG):

"Be even-tempered, content with second place, quick to forgive an offense. Forgive as quickly and completely as the Master forgave you."

In Colossians 3:13, we learn several important lessons about forgiveness:

1. Forgiveness is Essential in Relationships:

The verse begins with a call to "bear with each other," reminding us that people are imperfect. We will have misunderstandings, disagreements, and disappointments in any relationship. Learning to accept and tolerate others' flaws is an important foundation for a loving and supportive relationship.

2. We Are Called to Forgive Like Christ:

The verse emphasizes forgiving "as the Lord forgave you." This sets a high standard, reminding us that Jesus forgave us freely, completely, and without holding anything back. When we forgive others with this same spirit, we reflect God's love and grace in a powerful way.

3. Forgiveness Brings Freedom and Healing:

Forgiving others is not only about releasing the other person; it’s also about freeing ourselves from the burden of resentment and bitterness. When we forgive, we allow God’s peace to fill us, and we open the door for healing in our hearts and relationships.

4. Forgiveness Is Not Optional:

This verse presents forgiveness as a command, not merely a suggestion. If we hold onto grudges, we’re resisting God’s instruction and holding back the flow of grace He wants us to experience in our lives.

5. Forgiveness Reflects God's Character in Us:

When we forgive others, we mirror God’s love, patience, and mercy. It’s a way to bring God’s character into our lives and relationships, showing others the transformative power of His grace.

This verse encourages us to make forgiveness a way of life, not only to heal relationships but also to grow closer to God, who has forgiven us so fully.
